Create a clear, concise, and practical site

"Is my site good?" or "How do I create a visually pleasant site?" It is not easy to respond to this question, as we all know beauty is different to everyone.  So in this tutorial, we don't give you a magical formula to instantly create a flawless site. Instead, we are going to give you some tips to follow or some stuff to avoid regarding the content and design to help you make a website that makes the majority of site users happy.

Make a site, but with what purpose ?

Knowing the response to this question is the key to a smooth start. What do you put on your website? What add-ons are necessary to your activities? Who is your target audience? Concentrate on one subject. Creating a site that is a "hodgepodge of everything" is not useful, and confusing for site visitors and especially for search engines. You want your site visitor to know at a glance the point.

Websites have worth only if they communicate to the site visitors. And thus, your purpose should not just be to create traffic or to watch the site statistics go up this has no point. To propose a website with content that is interesting and up-to-date, the stats and the traffic take care of themselves. So the best tip is to have full rich content ! But do not copy and paste left and right, this is not allowed (and is penalised by Google).

A user-friendly site : make the navigation easy

When things are tidy, we can find them easily ? The content of your site is just like your storage. When you have a lot of stuff, or a little, you want to be able to find it easily. Organising makes this possible. The better your website is organised, the less site visitors you lose as they journey through the pages. To make easy navigation easy :

  • Avoid long menus. Few have the patience to scroll down a side menu or a drop down menu to find the information they are looking for. If a site visitor has to search, this a presentation problem. In a glance, the visitor can find what they want. You are not obligated to display everything, everywhere. Instead it is better to personalize the menus to your site, by creating a menu structure.

Attention : the more widgets installed on the menus, the heavier it is, this the slower to load. The speed of the site is an important factor to SEO referencing.
  • Avoid creating large pages. If you want to create long pages, you need to decide if you can present the information differently. Maybe by breaking into multiple pages or adding a page break, making clear references to your other pages by creating hyperlinks.
  • Display the common thread, which is an additional help to navigation ! The common thread is shown above your content (example at the top of this page) lets the site user know exactly where they are on the site (and go back easily to any of the pages they were on). To have the thread on your site, go to your manager and in "Settings > Design > Personalize", in the content section.
