Restrict access to site content using passwords

Website creators using VersionPLUS can limit access to any part of their website – or their whole website – by enabling passwords. Apply different passwords to different parts of the site, or temporarily limit access during site maintenance.lick here to add text.

Restrict access to all website content using a password

Disabling site access to all visitors is simple, and once enabled, none of the site pages will be accessible unless the site access password is entered correctly. Site passwords are stored as a cookie by the web browser for 48 hours, so successive visits won’t require the password to be re-entered, unless the browser cache is emptied.

To enable password access for all site content, edit the site plugin settings:

  • Head to the Settings > Global settings > Plugins menu of the site manager
  • Locate the Password access plugin settings
  • Enable the plugin, and enter the password of your choice
  • Save your changes, at the bottom of the page

Once applied, only those individuals to whom you’ve communicated the password will be able to access the site.

The password will also prevent search engines from accessing the page, so don’t enable the password access plugin for longer than necessary (otherwise information on your page will be hidden from search engines, and eventually removed from search engine results pages).

Restrict access to all content of an add-on

If you apply a password to the site settings, all site content will be inaccessible to visitors who don’t have the correct password. You can apply password access settings to a single content add-on if you’d prefer, to limit access just to that particular add-on (like the store, forum, blog or photo album).

To enable password access for all content of an add-on:

  • Head to the Options tab of that add-on (from the Add-ons menu)
  • Locate the Password access plugin settings
  • Enable the plugin, and enter the password of your choice
  • Save your changes, at the bottom of the page

Restrict access to all content within an add-on category

The content of your site add-ons can be divided into categories; by applying the password access plugin to a category of a content add-on, access to all the pages (items) in that category will require a password. All other categories in that add-on will remain accessible to visitors who don’t possess the password.

To enable password access for all content in a category:

  • Edit the category
  • Locate the Password access plugin settings
  • Enable the plugin, and enter the password of your choice
  • Save your changes, at the bottom of the page

Restrict access to a single page (item) of content

If you only need to block access to a limited number of content items (a single page, blog post, store product etc.), you can enable the plugin for each one, from its editor, and apply a different password for each page if you’d like.

To enable password access for a single item of site content:

  • Edit the item in the site manager
  • Locate the Password access plugin settings
  • Enable the plugin, and enter the password of your choice
  • Save your changes, at the bottom of the page
