  • Simplified blog content management

Our new content explorer has made managing site pages (in the Pages add-on) a whole lot easier for webmasters, and provided new website content management features, built into the explorer.

The new content explorer has now been extended to the Blog add-on, and in addition to the great new features already available in the Pages add-on, like one-click content duplicating and a powerful content search engine, the Blog content explorer also has a new feature, specific to the Blog add-on, designed to make it simpler than ever to create a blog and manage blog content.

All blog posts are now accessible directly from the root category, in addition to their specific category. The unified blog post list makes it a whole lot quicker to access your latest posts, to rapidly update or edit a post.

Your new Blog content explorer is now live in your doomby site manager, and will be extended to the other site content add-ons over the weeks ahead.

  • Get creative with your website design

We’re mentioned in the past why we do the things we do: to help you express yourself online, to communicate on the web, and above all else, to make the kind of website that’s right for you. The internet is a big place, and ensuring your message gets heard online is a whole lot easier if your website design appeals to visitors. Your site design is one of the first things that visitors will notice, so we’ve taken time to publish a some great new website design themes over the course of the year to help you get your site looking its best, in next to no time.

  • Personalize your website date, time zone and email formats

It’s been a while since the new version of doomby has been up and running, and high time to fill you in on some of the great new features. In addition to all the existing tools to make a website that you’ve been used to in the previous version, your website builder tools now enable you to personalize your website in new and exciting ways.

    Setting up website date formats

Your website settings include the possibility to personalize the layout of dates for items published on your website. Take this blog post as an example – if you look just under the post title, you’ll notice an automatic date stamp.

You can personalize the presentation of date stamps used on your website, to apply long date formats, abbreviated or numerical formats. And it doesn’t matter which side of the Atlantic, Pacific or Indian you live: you’ll find a date format that works for your website.

Define a time zone for your website

Personalize the time zone format for your website to ensure dates “rollover” the way they should, wherever you may live. Simply choose the time zone for your locale, or the one you’d prefer to apply to your website, and save your changes. It’s that easy.

    Personalize your website email address

Whenever visitors subscribe to your newsletters, order items on your online store or receive reply notification emails via your online contact forms, you can now personalize the email sender address and name that will appear in your site emails, to harmonize your online communications. Choose one of your personalized email addresses if you have your own domain name for your website for a coherent end-to-end online marketing and communications strategy.

To adjust and personalize your website settings, just head to the Settings > Global settings > Site info menu of your site manager.

  • Unleash your website: doomby V4

We’ve been pretty busy here at doomby over the last few months finishing up work on the next version of our free website builder. One of the key driving forces behind this work has been to help beginners make a website more easily than ever before, by simplifying the layout of menus and unifying website builder tools like the new site content explorer.

One of the new features of doomby V4 is the new site menu manager, designed to make managing website menus more user-friendly than ever.

  • Save, trash, and recycle site content: doomby V4

How many times have you thrown something away, only to regret it later on? If you’re anything like me, the answer to that question is “too many to count”. Website creation – especially when you first begin to make a website - inevitably results in more content than you need, and in way too many hastily deleted pages or files.

Up until now, that, as they say, was that: a deleted page, image, blog post or other element of your site content was gone for good. Deleting whatever site content you don’t need anymore is a solution to dealing with clutter, but it’s also a very radical, and permanent solution. Too bad if you change your mind later on, that page and those files are gone for good.

  • Easy site design tools: doomby V4

Although doomby comes with a wealth of ready-made design themes, one of the easiest ways of ensuring your site stands out from the crowd is to personalize your chosen design template. All the necessary website design tools are built right into the site manager, enabling you to choose colors, borders, fonts and images for your site header and background.

We’re currently finishing up work on getting the design editor ready for the next version of doomby’s free website builder, and it’s time to take a look at what’s in store.

  • Supercharge your site’s SEO: doomby V4

One of the most requested features we receive here at doomby is a website search function. Site searching is particularly useful, it must be said, if you make a website that extends beyond the homepage; you can add tag clouds and menus, but sometimes your visitors like digging around all by themselves to find exactly what they’re looking for.

We’ve spent a lot of time thinking about the best way to help visitors find your sites on search engines, and on ensuring they can easily access your site content, to make doomby even better for your website. Here’s a preview of the result of our hard work, coming up in the next version of your favorite free website builder: supercharged site SEO, with search!

  • Selective site content access: doomby V4

People choose to make a website for all kinds of reasons, so website content comes in all shapes and forms. But not everything you publish on your website is destined for viewing by just anyone; that online photo album, for example, might contain some images that you’d really rather not put on public display. And if you’re looking to make a company website, you might prefer not to share details of your next business meeting with people outside the office.

As doombyPLUS users already know, it’s simple to restrict access to site pages or add-ons, like the Diary, Photo album, Blog or Forum, ensuring only site members can access them, or visitors who have the right password. Selective content access is one of our most-used doombyPLUS features, so we’ve spent time ensuring it’s even better in our next version.

  • Managing site files: doomby V4

The next version of doomby is not far away, so it’s time to take a look at one of the most visible changes to your free website builder tools you’ll be encountering very soon. One of the most-requested features we’ve been asked for is a way to manage files more flexibly from within the site manager, and we’re happy to deliver!

In response to your requests, we’ve completely overhauled the way you’ll manage files in the next version of your very own free website maker. The changes will make it even easier to create a website and to manage your site content, with a more user-friendly and intuitive file manager.

  • Make a multi-language website: doomby v4

And whether you’ve decided to create a website for your friends and family, or to make a pro website for your business, chances are your potential site audience is a whole lot bigger than those huddled masses you had to fight with when you went last-minute gift shopping.

In order to help your website reach as many people as possible, it’s a good idea to ensure your site content is accessible to people who may not all speak the same language as you. We’re currently hard at work ensuring you’ll have everything you need to maximize your site audience. Here’s a sneak peak at one of the great new features coming soon for your doomby website.

It also ensures you keep a tight control over who sees what, by applying it to page comments or blog posting, and is a great way to share the workload of your daily site management.

  • Win the war on spam, quick and easy

Don't let you website get eaten up by spam.Website development can be a whole lot of fun, but does your website management ever get you down? Do you find yourself spending a lot less time these days doing useful stuff with your free website maker than you do cleaning up the messy leftovers of serial spammers? Like most of us, lately you've probably found out a whole lot more about Viagra, online pharmacies, fake watches, handbags and shoes than you'd really care to know. Not that these aren't potentially fascinating topics, it's just that you've probably got more important things to do with your time, like staring at navel lint, doing laundry or checking out the neighborhood wildlife. If it makes you feel a little better, you should know that you're not alone in your suffering: estimates are that around 80% of all emails sent worldwide are spam, and dealing with them has become a multi-billion dollar business.

Wouldn't it be great if you could manage the spam that starts seeping in when you create a website or make an online shop, via comments posted on your forum or blog, your online store or in web page comments? And wouldn't it be even better if you didn't have to do anything at all to manage spam, and if your website just took care of it all for you?

  • New free website maker. More magic and features. With extra pretty.

Monday was a pretty big day at the office. First there were the usual "how was your weekend" and a whole lot of "what, you still don't have an iPhone 4?" to get through. After that, there was the new free website maker (your site manager) to get out the door, or rather up and online. It took the better part of the day (it was heavy) but we finally sent it on it's way, and the consensus at the office is unanimous: we like it ... which isn't that surprising.

However, if the feedback we've received over the last couple of days is anything to go by, apparently so do you, our member community of beginner webmasters and experienced web designers alike. Well, we're just tickled pink to hear it, and we're all feeling pretty chuffed.

In this, the third installment of our series exploring the updated doomby site manager, we'll be checking out one of the central pillars of our website builder: the redesigned free website development tools. The changes we've been making have been motivated in large part by a desire to make it easier than ever to make a website. As a result, we've spent a lot of time reworking the general manager layout and the individual menus to ensure you spend less time looking for things and more time getting on with the business of website creation.

As I mentioned last time, our website builder tools are currently getting a major overhaul to make your website management even easier than before. • Navigating free website maker tools: manager update 1

doomby site manager update 1As I mentioned yesterday, the doomby site manager is undergoing a pretty radical facelift at the moment, in order help you make a website easier than ever before. We also thought it was about time we brought the visual design of your site management and web page builder tools into line with the public doomby website design. Today, we'll take the first of our tours behind the scenes of your updated free website maker tools, to help you familiarize yourself with the new site layout.

First up: site navigation. As you can see from the screenshot below, your new website manager is radically different (visually) from the current interface. Yet once you've familiarized yourself with the main changes to the menu layout, you'll soon feel right at home.

  • Make a website easier, faster, and better (with a touch of magic)

I really have to hand it to Apple, and not just because they have mastered the art of simple and effective website design. Lately, their very excellent marketing team has given me a good run with the word “magical”. I don't think a single day has gone by in the last month that I haven't been reminded of just how “magical” the ordinary can be.

Bus is on time? Magical. Shirt doesn't need ironing? Magical. Hair that's stopped growing? Magical. Water from a tap, toilets that flush, shoe laces that tie … magical, magical, magical.

Yes, just like certain advertising execs, I too have a slight tendency to exaggerate things at times (and to overuse already-overused words ...), but I promise you that what follows is no exaggeration: your favorite free website maker is about to undergo a transformation that really is magical*, and will completely change the way you make a website.

  • Diversify your website video content with Dailymotion

Get videos, get visitorsIt's been a few weeks since we released the new doomby video gallery, making it even easier to make a website that rocks, complete with your choice of video content. But if you were thinking it just couldn't possibly get any simpler to publish your video content with your favorite free website builder, you're in for a big surprise. Yes, we've got some great news for those of you who aren't fans of YouTube, or are looking to extend their search for jedi cats beyond Google's immediate sphere of influence. You can now import videos and expand your video gallery with content from Dailymotion as well. And if that isn't enough, we've also added a few extras and tweaked some existing elements to make what was already amazing … truly magical.

In spite of the pretty major hurdle represented by a missing API (apparently it's important), Sid* has came up trumps yet again. The resulting technical triumph means you can now search for and import Dailymotion videos to add to your website, without leaving your site manager.

  • Freecommerce - how to make a free online store

It's rare these days that you come across free things online that are genuinely useful. I mean, sure, there's free stuff that's also neat, handy or interesting (like jedi cats). But little of what you'll find online manages to combine usefulness and gratuity, without you running the risk of ending up with a hefty fine, jailed, or both. Unsatisfied with that sad status quo, today's Earth-shattering doomby annoucement is our response. Today, we're giving you something for nothing that will actually make you money, won't see you in jail1, and is super-useful2. Ever since our e-commerce solution came out (you know, the thing you can add to doomby's free website builder to make an e-commerce website that rocks), we've been all like "ohhh" and "awww" (but you hadn't noticed, right?), because we've been really pleased with what we developed. Well, we like it so much that we wanted to share it with everyone. Free. Yes, now everyone can create a website and make an

online store, and rest soundly knowing it won't cost a dime.

Call us crazy, but we were partly inspired by the vertiginous drop in the euro, figuring if we didn't make it free, the new peso of the north would soon be at a level where – for the price – we'd practically be giving it away anyway. So that's just what we decided to do.

  • Better e-commerce with automated stock management

I've been thinking a lot about Jedi cats since last week, and about how I'd been living with a master of the Force for all these years without my even noticing it (though, with hindsight, his name – Yoda – was a fairly obvious clue). With just a stare, he can stop anyone dead in their tracks, forcing them - against their will - to drop everything and rub his belly. Like his namesake, he is truly a Jedi master.

Disappointing to me though it may be, not everyone seems to share my passion for feline mysticism. Nicolas is one such individual, and rather than spending his time pondering the levels of midichlorians in the blood of domestic pets, he's actually been doing something useful this past week, and has preferred spending his time thinking about online store stock management.

Imagine it: your online store looks great, you've set up your killer products with unbeatable pricing to leave the competition in your wake. You've spent hours taking multiple images of each and every item against a white sheet you hung up on your living room wall, so your customers can get a good look at them from every possible angle. You've painstakingly adjusted every single aspect of your product page design to fit perfectly with your website design, and have now built the world's most amazing (dare I say, magical) online store; not only have you learnt how to make a website that rocks, but you now have an equally brillant e-commerce website.

You are an overnight e-commerce success story.

Until you run out of stock, that is.

  • Instant website success? Try Jedi cats.

The internet is truly remarkable. Just think about it: 99% of what you'll find online serves no practical purpose at all. Yet that's the stuff most people spend their time watching - a lot like TV. If you want to make a website an overnight success, forget about adding free forums or wondering how to make a blog and build a following; it'll take way more than a couple of hours to build a sizable audience.

Got a great idea for how to make an online store a roaring success? Well, sorry, but that isn't going to get you millions of hits before sunrise. And no, if you're out to break a world record for building a massive following for your free website in as little time as possible, you don't have to take your clothes off, nor anyone else's for that matter.

To make your own website a true internet super phenomenon, you just need one thing: Jedi cats.

  • 4 ways to improve online sales with updated e-commerce

It's been a busy week here at doomby, and not only for our awesome website development team, fantastic support staff and brilliant managers. Even Starey the cat has been out and about, celebrating the end of a long winter (though it may actually have been fear of the great Icelandic ash cloud of 2010, or the substantial volume of fresh neighborhood roadkill, that did it).

Most of the productive buzz emanating from the far side of our offices these last few days has centered on the latest updates to our e-commerce website solution. The focus of these updates has been on improving the online store experience for your e-commerce clients, and on facilitating store management and layout to better leverage sales opportunities. As always, the goal of these latest additions is to provide new ways to create a website to really maximize revenue growth and opportunities.

  • Manage your online store faster, better and more easily

Given the rapid pace of my colleague's recent programming exploits improving our free website builder, you could be forgiven for thinking he was either:

    1. junked up on caffeine (or worse), or
    2. a truly conscientious workaholic.

Although he does drink more coffee than I do, I couldn't reasonably describe his consumption as excessive. And as I'm not convinced he's the type who'd take illicit drugs (nor have I really taken the time to examine his pupils lately, what with being busy and all), I'll go for the second option (maybe he wants a raise – a car that old must cost a fortune to repair).

In any case, he's been feverishly working on fleshing out improvements to our e-commerce website tools and online store website manager, and it's really starting to bear fruit: yes, it's now even easier than ever to make a website with doomby. We really like what he's done - in fact, I'm even tempted to make a business website and build my very own little online shopping mall. Well, almost – it's a little hard, since I really haven't got a clue, and have nothing to sell*, save for a billion or so cottony hydrangea scale and about as many cat hairs (wanna buy some, cheap?).

  • Get your online store looking good for e-commerce success

As I mentioned at the end of last week, our development team has been feverishly working away on additions and overhauls to and our free website builder tools. In last Friday's post, I detailed doomby's latest social networking additions (or social bookmarking, if you prefer), enabling you to create a website with easily sharable content through Facebook and Twitter integration.

This week we'll have a quick look at the latest improvements to our e-commerce website module, designed to help you make an online store that looks just the way you want it to, with a stack of new web design tools to provide greater control over the look and feel of your store's product presentation.

Our new online store website design editor is all about enabling you to make a business website that looks even better, by editing your store's CSS without needing to have the slightest idea of what CSS is, and giving your store a easy makeover you can be proud of (and that will keep your customers coming back for more!).

For those of you who actually do have an in-depth understanding of CSS, you can edit your store's CSS code directly - just as you can with your website design CSS - to achieve the same effect (and feel a whole lot cleverer).

  • 3 quick and easy website updates for a better SERP web presence

Improving SERP in 3 quick steps - Google heat mapIt's pretty clear that spring has arrived with a bang – not only have temperatures skyrocketed (much to my cats' delight), but after last week's emyspot website makeover, our hyperactive team this week got stuck into developing some really great additions to our members' website builder tools. The team's efforts weren't limited to subscribers to our pro website development offers – if you're one of our members who enjoy the opportunity to make a free website with doomby, you haven't been left out either, and can already take advantage of the latest additions to your favorite free website builder.

This week's development efforts have concentrated on how to make a website better through social networking integration. Though we've long provided an access to social bookmarking services for your website content directly from the site manager, allowing you to publish your page links to your Facebook and Twitter accounts, this week we added a few menu gadgets to let your site visitors do the sharing for you. Though simple to set up, they really help improve your SERP ranking – or web presence – exponentially. All without you lifting a finger (almost).

  • It's now easier and prettier to make a website

I'm sure our millions of avid readers would have noticed my absence last week, and have probably been suffering in agony ever since. Sorry for that. But there was a very, very good reason, and as I am now back, you can all breathe a collective sigh of relief (and take down that Facebook vigil). For those of you who've dropped by your favorite free website builder in the last few days, you'll probably already have figured out why – for those who haven't, you soon will.

In any case, you'll probably all agree that after four months it was time for doomby to get a little dressed-up (inspired, no doubt, by this image from a few weeks back, to aim for bigger and better things) - both to encourage you to strive for webmastering excellence, and to create a website that rocks. So kudos to Pascal and Florian for some really fantastic work on getting the site up and looking great (I knew they had pretty genes in there somewhere ...).

  • Ready, steady, shop: e-commerce is here.

Get an emyspot e-storeAs I said last week, the guys over at the computers with the big screens (a.k.a. the developers) have been busy lately - especially Nicolas - and the second big thing they've been feverishly working on is now online.

Yes, doomby's e-commerce website solution is finally here, so now you can not only make your own website with your favorite website builder, you can also use it to sell stuff too with your very own online store.

    Neat, eh?

  • Happy new year. Now get your menus in order.

Bad menus, bad. Good menus, good.I was lazy last week. Really lazy. I didn't even get around to posting "Happy New Year" to the blog or our Facebook page during Thursday night's champagne-athon (though I meant to), a terrible faux pas for which I will now most humbly apologize.

"I'm really rather quite sorry. Seriously."

To be honest, last week was a whole week of nothingness for me: I didn't make a website, I didn't post to a blog, I barely skimmed Facebook, and I spent most of the week sitting around watching my cat (she was sick).

Fortunately for you, everyone else here at doomby was actually busy doing very important things last week (unlike me), and that means a whole bunch of stuff has, or is about to, change with your favorite free website builder. Today we'll focus on one of the things they were busy working on: menus (you know, those über-important navigational aids for helping others visit your website).

  • E-commerce is coming (to town)

The gift of giving e-commerceNoticed anything red, green and/or sparkly around town lately? It's that time of the year again - decorations are out in force, and so are the crowds. Folks are learning how to make a website decorated with animated snowflakes ... even I've succumbed to the spirit of the season and started menu planning for the family do (I'm doing vegetables, because I'm lazy). Ah, the holiday season: that special time of the year when family members try to let bygones be bygones, and retailers try to make their reserves for the year ahead. A little like squirrels (I saw one this morning while Dearie-spotting, and just had to mention it), but taller, and with more clothes and less fur.

In the spirit of giving, this year we're getting ready to bring you a very special gift that we know you're going to love. I mentioned it last week, and thought I might devote a little time to outlining some of the features our e-commerce add-on will soon provide to happy online store owners the world over.

Crafted painstakingly by our talented developer Nicolas, the administration interface is really taking form and will be heading off for select beta-testing in the next couple of weeks. He's not one to brag, so let me do it for him: it's shaping up to be an infinitely adaptable, feature-packed, scalable solution for businesses large and small.

  • Mommy dearest ... at least there are developers to ease the pain

Parents can be such a disappointment. Here I was, convinced my mother would become a key part of our marketing strategy: living proof that doomby makes it easy to make a website. “Don't believe me?” I'd say. “It's so easy, even my mother can make a website with doomby!”. I'm sure I even used that as the central pitch of my job interview, and is very probably the reason why I got hired: “buy one, get one free!”.  Several months later, I even went so far as to ask her if that was OK, and decided that I would respect her wishes (unless she said no).

Then she had to go and ruin everything by having “technical problems”.

She often does, so it shouldn't have surprised me. Like sometimes, she can't quite figure out how to switch things on. It was power sockets the last time I dropped by for a visit - that should have set the alarm bells off but no, I had to persist. “Growing pains,” I thought. “She'll learn”. When I got the phone call last week - “I went on the website, but I couldn't see where you wrote anything about me” - it started becoming all too clear. My mother was either consciously rebelling (a family trait, so highly likely) or slightly … technically challenged.

Either way, it was just so disappointing. I mean, you try to get them off to a good start by giving them the best years of your life, then this is how they treat you …

  • 1 big week, 2 big guest stars, and a stack of big changes

For our Facebook fans, you'll be pleasantly surprised to know that you didn't have to wait “a few days” for an update: it's already here, and the waiting is over!

We've had a big week at doomby. Lots of new things have been going on, including the addition of some much-requested features to help you make a website even more quickly and easily.

Here's some of the more interesting new features we've added to the doomby free website builder:
